Material Textures & Fabric Weaves
Texture carries as much as the colour does, and the move is to put unlike things together. A heavy open-weave linen or a wool blend has grain and shade; you read it with your hand as much as your eye. Sit a silk or a jacquard next to that, and it does the opposite. Worth knowing before you buy a cushion,
- The heavier the cloth, the higher the GSM, the better it holds a crisp edge and hangs on a big cushion. Loose open weaves are lovely, but they snag and mark more quickly. Your call, which way to lean?
- On anything in daily use, ask for the Martindale rub count on the cover. It is the same abrasion figure you would check on upholstery, and many pretty cushion fabrics quietly fail it.
- Mix matte against sheen. Linen or wool with silk or velvet. That contrast is what reads as designed rather than bought as a set.
Living Rooms vs Bedrooms
The two rooms want opposite cushions. A deep sofa swallows anything small, so designer cushions for sofas need to be big and fairly firm, 55cm or 60cm square, sat in odd numbers and worked in from the arms. A bed is the reverse. Softer fills, stacked in layers back to front against the headboard, a lumbar cushion in front to break the height and to lean on. How do I choose the right cushion colours for my interior?
Take inspiration from the room. A line in the rug, a shade in a painting, the wall behind. Pull two or three colours that already speak to each other instead of matching one exactly, then let a single cushion be the loud one.
Can designer cushions be mixed with different textures?
You should, every time. A grouping that is all one texture looks like a packet. Keep the colours close and let the surfaces argue a bit, something matte against something with a shine, and it reads as considered.
